Substance

The series Substance employs monochrome and colour photography as well as digital animation to play on our perception of – and reaction to – scientific illustrations and models offered to us, our unquestioning belief in their authenticity and the extent to which this belief may be stretched.

In Substance, liquids ‘trace’ themselves on photographic paper by means of light transmitted through them. It challenges the imagination while addressing issues of space, the interior versus the exterior, science versus fiction and even science as fiction.

This is part of the series. Additional images in Projects.

Substance Close-Up can be experienced on a small monitor as well as a large-scale projection. In the spirit of science versus fiction and even science as fiction, it imitates scientific representations of molecular structures while the appearance of the computer-generated objects invites readings very different to that of mere ‘models’.
